Youth Art Month (YAM) is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art and art education
for all children and to encourage public support for quality school art programs. Established in 1961 and
sponsored by the Council for Art Education, Inc., YAM provides a forum for acknowledging skills that are not
possible in other subjects. Art education develops self-esteem, appreciation of the work of others, selfexpression, cooperation with others, and critical thinking skills. All these skills are vital to the success of our
future leaders, our children.
Youth Art Month is an essential program that champions the vital role of quality art programs in schools while
emphasizing the importance of safe art materials. Administered by the Council for Art Education (CFAE) at the
national level, this program seeks to inspire action and commitment. At the local and state level the Wisconsin
Art Education Association organizes YAM exhibits and celebrations throughout our state. Our culminating
event takes place in Madison. Six regional vice-presidents of WAEA select artworks to go on to the State Youth
Art Month Celebration.
We must recognize that art education is a fundamental component of a child's overall learning experience. By
advocating for strong school art programs, we can empower students to express themselves and develop
critical skills. Promoting the safety of art materials ensures a secure environment for creativity to flourish.
Together, we can enhance community understanding of the value of art and art education, fostering increased
support from local businesses and government agencies. Let’s celebrate and invest in the skills and innovation
that emerge from visual arts experiences, paving the way for a brighter, more creative future for every child.
